Haiti Ministry Support GroupMission Statement:

    To share information about, pray for, and encourage ministries and missionaries in Haiti through monthly meetings, fundraising events and projects. To pray for the immediate needs of Haiti and it’s people and provide a welcoming and supportive fellowship group for those involved in Haiti’s mission activity. To promote awareness of Haiti’s needs and engage support of others.

About Haiti:

Location: 90 miles SE of Cuba; Western third of the island of Hispaniola, shared with the Dominican Republic

Size: 10,714 sq. miles, approx. the size of Vancouver Island
Population: Over 8 million, which is nearly 800 people per square mile average. The capital city of Port-au-Prince is more densely populated.
Religion: Vodou, Catholic and Protestant – there is a saying that Haitians are 80% Catholic and 100% vodou because they often practice both.

Important historical fact: First black republic in the world after having won their independence from France in 1804

Important current facts: Poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world – most of the people/families live on less than $2/day. Illiteracy and malnutrition is high. Deforestation is a worsening crisis. Ongoing political instability and varying degrees of unrest keeps the cycle spiraling downward.
